Building Software for the Ageing Population: A Software Engineering Point of View
BIO
Dr. Sebastien Mosser is professor of Software Engineering at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM, Canada). His research interests cover DevOps, software development and separation of concerns mechanisms, focusing on domain-specific languages, model-driven engineering and software composition.
Dr. Anne-Marie Pinna-Déry is professor of Computer Science at Université Côte d’Azur (UCA, France). Her research interests cover Human-Computer Interactions, software architecture and distributed systems. In 2003, she started teaching courses dedicated to HCI and human-centred design, first with visually impaired children and, more recently, with the ageing population.
ABSTRACT
Elders occupy an ample space among the potential end-users of the pieces of software we are designing. This situation is only increasing, and even the pessimistic projections forecast global ageing in the World population. In this context, our duty as software engineers is to design and implement software adapted to elders. This presentation will illustrate several software engineering paradigms (agility, DevOps) and tools (user stories, acceptance testing, continuous deployment) from the state of practice that can be useful in this context. We will illustrate these approaches with examples from a course shared by Université Côte d’Azur and Université du Québec à Montréal on this topic as part of a France-Québec collaborative project. This work is based on 18 years of experience in the teaching of requirement engineering for specific populations (such as elders or visually-impaired children) in France.
