ABSTRACT:

In the past century, we have added 30 years to human lifespans. What we have not done is add a similar number of ‘healthy’ years or a period we refer to as healthspan. Healthspan refers to the period of a person’s life during which they are generally in good health. While nobody would expect not to age, the question is how we extend a person’s healthspan. Despite substantial advances in the end-stage treatment of diseases, a fundamental axiom is that personal and community mobility are strongly associated with healthspan, including improved health-related quality of life. In my talk, I will cover some of the evidence that physical activity (and exercise) is ‘medicine’ and that we need to develop strategies that harness innovation to promote physical activity, to enhance mobility in older persons.
